Donor Luncheon and Groundbreaking

On a lovely Fall day, more than 300 people gathered at the corner of 16th and Dolores Streets to participate in the Groundbreaking festivities at Holy Family Day Home. After more than a century of service to the children and families of San Francisco, the Day Home begins construction on our 15,000 square-foot building, which will provide enriched early education space for 150 children.

Holy Family Day Home featured in Starbucks Ad

The partnership between Holy Family Day Home and the Starbucks Coffee Company has been particularly fruitful. In addition to on-going grants, in-kind donations and volunteer interactions, a wonderful relationship with our Starbucks Ambassador, Larry Waterhouse, led to a $50,000 Grants for Giving award for our Family Literacy Program in May of 2003.

A letter written by Donna Cahill, HFDH Executive Director, to express thanks for the award, resulted in the full-page advertisement in the San Francisco Chronicle on August 20, 2004. An 8x10 of the advertisement also was placed on the counters of the Starbuck stores in the Bay Area. Click here to see the ad (PDF).

Thanks Starbuck for being such a wonderful corporate partner to the children and families of Holy Family Day Home. www.starbucks.com

Field Trips with Gap. Inc.

The children and staff at Holy Family Day Home received a tremendous boost this year from the generous people at GAP, Inc. In partnership with Hands On Bay Area, all five Dolores Street classrooms (Bearcubs, Sunflowers, Starfish, Spaghettios and Wizards) were able to go on a very special field trip to the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito. Our newest friends even provided luxurious charter buses for a wonderful ride over the scenic Golden Gate Bridge. Usually, we take our field trips via public transportation!

Many volunteers from GAP, Inc. provided lots of hands-on support throughout the adventure. We had at least 12-16 volunteers during each trip. It was hard to tell who was having more fun, the kids or the volunteers, as everyone explored the many creative areas at the Museum! Everyone also enjoyed a clever pictorial scavenger hunt.

Our friends at GAP, Inc. also joined the staff and children for another outing. This time, two classrooms — the Starfish and Sunflowers — got a chance to visit the Coyote Point Museum in San Mateo for the FIRST time!

Thanks to everyone at GAP, Inc. (Banana Republic, GAP ONLINE, Old Navy, and the local GAP stores) and Hands On Bay Area for making these activities possible!
